Air pollution

November 2017.

Last 19 October was the World Breast Cancer Awareness Day. This day is a reminder of the commitment of all society in the fight against breast cancer.

Breast cancer is one of the most common tumors suffered by women in the Western World, according to the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC), who states that research is still the only means to ensure its healing in the long run. That is the reason why there are so many research programs going on.

Although there is no prevention for breast cancer, there are some risk factors associated to it, such as the use of hormone replacement treatments during menopause, and some recommendations such as having regular check-ups made in the case of having a genetic predisposition.

However, that is not the only cancer that population suffers, and there are other sorts of cancers, which have been associated to other risk factors, such as air pollution. This is the case of lung cancer, which has been listed as the first cause of premature death among women in Barcelona, according to a report released by the City Council of Barcelona on the 9th of November of 2017.

Kidney, bladder, and colorectal cancer have also been associated to air pollution. The Ambient Air Pollution and Cancer Mortality in the Cancer Prevention Study II, published by the journal Environmental Health perspectives [1] in August 2017, identified the types of pollutants causing theses illnesses.

This study, which was developed along 22 years, included cohort of 60,000 adult people in the United States. The conclusion was an association between mortality due to these types of cancer and the exposure, at home, to three contaminants: PM 2.5 (2.5 or less micron sized particles), nitrogen dioxide and ozone.

This study opens up the door to further future research in this field, but it also sets out the need to apply means to prevent its exposure.

Air pollution is mainly caused by human actions. That is the reason why prevention means should be based on social awareness, in order to reduce pollutant emissions as much as possible. Among these measures we should consider the consumption of non-pollutant energy and products, which are present in the economic cycle, in transport means, but also in the products and furniture that we use and have at home.

Likewise, as a direct prevention, there are air purification systems, such as that of Zonair3d, which protect us from the exposure to the pollutants mentioned before (PM 2.5, nitrogen dioxide and ozone) at home, in the school and at work, since its technology has proven a high efficiency of particles measuring up to 0.2 micron (99,995%) and toxic gases, such as nitrogen dioxide, as well as a 100% ozone removal.

Taking measures is the most straightforward way to fight against cancer, which cure is still a pending issue. Anyway, as in every disease, prevention is the best weapon to fight and protect oneself, and Zonair3d is on the side of human beings to help them keep their health and improve quality of life.
